Upon its release in 1967, A Christmas Album instantly topped Billboard’s Best Bets for Christmas chart. With 5.5 million copies sold to date, it has become a perennial favorite and one of the best-selling holiday records of all time.
Barbra’s novel idea was to give each side of the album a distinctive tone, separating the secular tracks from the sacred. Veteran arranger Marty Paich (known for his work with Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald) oversaw the traditional songs, while Ray Ellis (celebrated for Billie Holiday’s classic, Lady In Satin) arranged the religious songs.
